Immunology at the crossroads

چکیده
tell us stories that live in our minds long after we read their words. After 20 years of training some 200 graduate students, I can report some progress in convincing editors that properly trained scientists can do the job of reporting on science for general readers. However—and this is a big however— editors still insist that these scientists must, no matter what their qualification in science, move through some version of the traditional gauntlet of disparate beats at small and medium-sized newspapers before assuming a high-profile science writer position at a national newspaper. No matter how well grounded one is in science, there are no shortcuts to becoming a nationally prominent science reporter. Indeed, all I can say to scientists who are considering science writing as a career is this: succeeding in science journalism is no easier than succeeding in science. One must be called to it, almost as one is called to a religious life. Our students have, in part perhaps for mystical reasons, done well. Nearly all those we have trained have moved into jobs in newspapers, magazines, museums, zoos, aquariums, and news offices in universities and government laboratories. A few have gone into the more specialised fields of technical writing or medical writing. Not a single one, interestingly, has gone back to the laboratory bench.

Delving into the close relationship between sense and emotion mingled with language can be of utmost importance in studies related to management of emotions. In this regard, the current study qualitatively attempted to examine to what extent sense-induced emotions can be recognized, labelled, and managed by individuals. To this end, 36 Iranian males and females were asked to participate in inte...
متن کاملCancer Immunology at the Crossroads: Microbiology HPV Infection–Associated Cancers: Next-Generation Technology for Diagnosis and Treatment
Disease caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) remains common, despite preventive vaccines and screening strategies. Globally, HPVs cause one third of infection-associated cancers. The indolent clinical course of the precursor intraepithelial lesions provides an opportunity to understand immunologic obstacles posed by the microenvironment of incipient disease, and how they might be overcome. Resu...
متن کاملCancer Immunology at the Crossroads: Experimental Immunotherapies Tumoral Immune Resistance Mediated by Enzymes That Degrade Tryptophan
Cancer patients mount T-lymphocyte responses against antigens expressed selectively by their malignancy, but these responses often fail to control their disease, because tumors select mechanisms that allow them to resist immune destruction. Among the numerous resistance mechanisms that have been proposed, metabolic inhibition of T cells by tryptophan catabolism deserves particular attention, be...
متن کاملCancer Immunology at the Crossroads: Complementary Therapeutic Modalities Targeting Heat-Shock Protein 90 (HSP90) as a Complementary Strategy to Immune Checkpoint Blockade for Cancer Therapy
The demonstration that immune checkpoint blockade can meaningfully improve outcomes for cancer patients has revolutionized the field of immuno-oncology. New biologic agents targeting specific checkpoints have shown remarkable durability in terms of patient response and, importantly, exhibit clinical activity across a range of human malignancies, including many that have traditionally proven ref...
متن کاملCancer Immunology at the Crossroads: Complementary Therapeutic Modalities The Interplay of Immunotherapy and Chemotherapy: Harnessing Potential Synergies
Although cancer chemotherapy has historically been considered immune suppressive, it is now accepted that certain chemotherapies can augment tumor immunity. The recent success of immune checkpoint inhibitors has renewed interest in immunotherapies, and in combining them with chemotherapy to achieve additive or synergistic clinical activity. Two major ways that chemotherapy promotes tumor immuni...
